MATAMA is one of the local NGOs in Malawi. It was registered with Government in 1997 and acquired membership with the Council for Non-Governmental Organisations in Malawi (CONGOMA) thereafter. MATAMA’s Mission is supporting rural and peri-urban Communities in Malawi (especially children, women and the disabled) in the attainment of their desired socio-economic status through utilisation of appropriate technologies in water, sanitation and HIV intervention.

Activities and Other Projects:

PARTNERS

In order to increase resources to the beneficiaries, MATAMA engages the Technical Stand-by Specialists or Partner Institutions. The key ones are ; Water AID, USAID, Government, Lilongwe City Assembly, MC Studios, Willy and Partners Engineering Consultants and the Center for Development Research in Southern Africa. New Partners are developed whenever necessary. Internationally Water for People (USA) has been our main financer for over 4 years now and their Malawian office has since last year become a very important backer.

FUTURE ACTIVTIESnew

  1. In line with its objectives, MATAMA will continue to support community development, focusing on areas of national need. To date, apart from Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, MATAMA is expanding into HIV/AIDS and Food Security, in the same areas where there are other MATAMA projects already.
  2. Since mineral activities are not much availed to NGOs with respect to other Sectors, MATAMA is considering changing the name soon to reduce the prominence of minerals

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES

  1. To promote appropriate technologies necessary for enabling sustainable development.
  2. To build capacities of Communities and their support agents in various sectors.
  3. To promote proper natural resource management, including mineral and environmental exploitation .

STRATEGIES

MATAMA strictly follows Government regulations and standards in the various Sectors. Its multi-sectoral strategy is based on participatory development. Community based management (based on community ownership), capacity building and appropriate technology promotion are some of MATAMA’s key operational pillars.

MATAMA will work in a specific area that will be chosen after our stragic meetings are through. This will be done because:

  • We want results of our interventions to be noticed
  • We want to focus our resources at a small area rather than sparsely as it might lead to overstretching.
